This is a veritable Mecca for visitors to Prague and it’s not difficult to see why. It has all the essential features of a traditional Czech pub. “Over the years we’ve had guests from every conceivable corner of the world. Our menu alone is available in 16 different languages,” beams the owner as the brass band plays. He goes from table to table welcoming the guests and chatting to them. “Where are you from? France? Ah yes, well we had Lionel Jospin and Jacques Chirac here. Their photo is up there on the wall.” The main dining space seats several hundred guests and was refurbished some time in the 30’s, although a restaurant has stood on this spot for over a 100 years. The walls are covered with large cartoon depictions of the literary character Good Soldier Švejk and quotes from Jaroslav Hašek’s book. Visitors have obliged with their own comments and signitures. The menu offers generous portions of no-nonsense traditional Czech food washed down with one-litre glasses of local beer. “If you’re really hungry, nothing beats the roast duck with dumplings.“
